US Mint Annual Silver Sets: 2010-2021

The United States Mint has been releasing annual sets created solely for collectors for many years with those series containing examples of circulating coins issued that year. Among the most popular of these are the US Mint Annual Silver Sets. These contain proof quality examples of circulating coins which are typically struck from a clad composition. However, for the purposes of these annual silver sets, the Mint strikes some of the coins from a composition containing silver.

A similar annual silver set was first released in 1976, but the precious metal coins included in that product were only struck from 40% silver. It was not until 1992 that the US Mint issued the first United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ which contained three coins struck from 90% silver. Those three silver coins included a Kennedy Half Dollar, the Washington Quarter Dollar and the Roosevelt Dime. The remaining two coins (the Jefferson Nickel and the Lincoln Penny) were struck from their standard clad composition.

Those silver proof sets were produced in a similar fashion from that debut until 1999. That year saw the inaugural releases of the Mint’s 50 State Quarters® Program which meant the number of circulating quarters issued by the Mint went from one per year up to five. Accordingly, the Silver Proof Sets also saw an increase in the number of coins it contained as the Mint included 90% silver proof quality examples of all five quarters issued that year.

Following years saw additional increases in the number of coins included in the silver proof set as new circulating coins were created such as the Sacagawea Dollars and the Presidential $1 Coins. However, none of these new additions were featured in 90% silver. The only change of this type occurred in 2009 when the number of quarters issued as part of the D.C. and U.S. Territories Quarters Program was six meaning the silver proof set included six quarters, a Roosevelt Dime and a Kennedy Half Dollar all struck from the precious metal.

Recognizing the popularity of these precious metal containing collections, the US Mint also started issuing a Quarters Silver Proof Set in 2004. These annual silver sets only include 90% silver proof quality versions of the circulating quarters released that year and do not include any other denomination.

2010 Silver Sets

The 2010 Quarters Silver Proof Set includes a total of five pieces struck from 90% silver to proof quality. These strikes represent the inaugural year releases of Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program including strikes honoring Hot Springs National Park of Arkansas, Yellowstone National Park of Wyoming, Yosemite National Park of California, Grand Canyon National Park of Arizona and Mount Hood National Forest of Oregon.

The 2010 Silver Proof Set also contains those five new America the Beautiful Quarters as well as a Kennedy Half Dollar and a Roosevelt Dime struck from silver. Seven other strikes are also found in the set completing the circulating coins issued that year, but these additional pieces are struck from their standard clad composition.

2011 Silver Sets

Included as part of the 2011 Quarters Silver Proof Set are precious metal examples of the quarters honoring Gettysburg National Military Park of Pennsylvania, Glacier National Park of Montana, Olympic National Park of Washington, Vicksburg National Military Park of Mississippi and Chickasaw National Recreation Area of Oklahoma. These five strikes represent the sixth through the tenth release of the Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

Those five quarters are also included as part of the 2011 Silver Proof Set. The set contains a total of fourteen coins with seven struck from the precious metal and seven from their standard clad composition.

2012 Silver Sets

With the year of 2012, five new quarters will be issued as part of the Mint’s ongoing quarter series and included as part of the 2012 Quarters Silver Proof Set. Along with those five quarters, the 2012 Silver Proof Set should also contain a Kennedy Half Dollar and a Roosevelt Dime also struck from precious metal. The remaining seven coins of the set will likely be featured in their standard clad composition.

Strikes included will honor Effigy Mounds National Monument of Iowa, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site of the District of Columbia, Ozark National Scenic Riverways of Missouri, Ellis Island National Monument of New Jersey and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park of Indiana.

The 2017 Silver Proof Set should include those five quarters struck from silver as well as a Kennedy Half Dollar and Roosevelt Dime struck from the precious metal. Additional coins of the set will complete the representation of the circulating coins released in 2017, but will likely be struck from clad.

These coins will feature reverses honoring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore of Michigan, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore of Wisconsin, Voyageurs National Park of Minnesota, Cumberland Island National Seashore of Georgia and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge or Rhode Island.

Joining those five quarters in the 2018 Silver Proof Set will be additional strikes to completely represent the circulating coinage of the year. However, only two of those additional coins should be struck from silver including the Kennedy Half Dollar and the Roosevelt Dime.

These strikes will have reverses emblematic of Lowell National Historical Park of Massachusetts, American Memorial Park of the Northern Mariana Islands, War in the Pacific National Historical Park of Guam, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park of Texas and Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness of Idaho.

Those five quarters will also be included in the 2019 Silver Proof Set. In addition, more strikes will also be found in the set to completely represent the circulating coins of the year.

2021 Silver Sets

At the time of posting, the 2021 Quarters Silver Proof Set is known to only have one coin issued as part of it. This will be a strike completing the original run fifty-six coins of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program and will honor Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site of Alabama. Additional silver coins could be included in the set if Congress or the Treasury Secretary (who can exercise an option allowed in the original legislation for the America the Beautiful Quarters) opt to continue the quarters program. Additionally, Congress may opt to change the quarters issued which would affect this release.

Any quarters issued as part of the 2021 Quarters Silver Proof Set will also be found in the 2021 Silver Proof Set. Additionally, the other circulating coins issued in 2021 will also be represented in the set.
