2016 Silver Sets

The 2016 Silver Sets from the US Mint should include two unique offerings – the 2016 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Setand the 2016 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™. As the name of these silver sets indicates, coins included inside (at least some of them) are struck from a composition of 90% of the precious metal.

Containing coins struck from 90% silver, these silver sets will then have an intrinsic melt value. However, most purchase the silver sets more for their numismatic value and to add them to their own personal collection rather than for the precious metal content. However, even if in the future, collectors would not be interested in the silver sets, they will always have that melt value.

These coins are each struck to proof quality at the US Mint’s facility in San Francisco. Once struck, the coins are then encased in special protective lenses before shipping.

2016 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set

The 2016 Quarters Silver Proof Set contains the five coins struck that year as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. These 2016 America the Beautiful Quarters represent the seventh year for the series which debuted in 2010 and is scheduled to run until 2021 at which time a total of fifty-six strikes will have been released as part of the series.

The 2016 Quarters Silver Sets will include the following five strikes:

  • 2016-S Shawnee Quarter representing Shawnee National Forest of Illinois
  • 2016-S Cumberland Gap Quarter representing Cumberland Gap National Historical Park of Kentucky
  • 2016-S Harpers Ferry Quarter representing Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia
  • 2016-S Theodore Roosevelt Quarter representing Theodore Roosevelt National Park of North Dakota
  • 2016-S Fort Sumter Quarter representing Fort Sumter National Monument of South Carolina

Totaled together, the five coins of this set encompass 0.904 ounces of silver.

2016 Silver Proof Set

The 2016 Silver Proof Set will contain at least thirteen strikes representative of all of the circulating coins produced by the US Mint that year. This is only less strike than included in the previous year’s 2015 silver sets, which had fourteen strikes.

That is because 2016 may only see a total of three Presidential $1 Coins included as part of it. However, an additional Presidential $1 Coin may be added if a former US President passes away in time to be included in the series.

As it currently stands, the 2016 Silver Sets will include the following thirteen coins:

  • 2016-S Lincoln Cent
  • 2016-S Jefferson Nickel
  • 2016-S Roosevelt Dime
  • 2016-S Shawnee Quarter
  • 2016-S Cumberland Gap Quarter
  • 2016-S Harpers Ferry Quarter
  • 2016-S Theodore Roosevelt Quarter
  • 2016-S Fort Sumter Quarter
  • 2016-S Kennedy Half Dollar
  • 2016-S Native American $1 Coin
  • 2016-S Richard M. Nixon Presidential $1 Coin
  • 2016-S Gerald Ford Presidential $1 Coin
  • 2016-S Ronald Reagan Presidential $1 Coin

Seven of the coins included in these silver sets will be struck from the precious metal – the five quarters, the Roosevelt Dime and the Kennedy Half Dollar. Combined, these seven coins total 1.338 ounces of the precious metal.
