San Antonio Missions Silver Uncirculated Coins

The 2019 San Antonio Missions Silver Uncirculated Coins will be the forty-ninth strikes released as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program. These five ounce .999 fine silver strikes also mark the fourth of five scheduled to be issued in 2019 in the series and will each feature a reverse design emblematic of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park of Texas.

These same reverse designs will actually also be featured on two other coins from the US Mint – the 2019 San Antonio Missions Quarter and the 2019 San Antonio Missions Silver Bullion Coin. Both the quarter and the bullion coin were authorized by Congress under Public Law 110-456 (America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008).

However, Congress made no direct stipulation for these collector grade uncirculated coins. Instead, they are struck under the authority granted the Treasury Secretary to produce and sell numismatic products in 31 U.S.C. §5111(a) (3).

The uncirculated coins are to feature specifications similar to the bullion series but whereas the bullion strikes are intended for investors, the US Mint will produce the uncirculated coins solely for collectors. As such, each will be sold directly to the public by the US Mint which differs from the bullion program which are sold through the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers.

2019 San Antonio Missions Silver Uncirculated Coin Values

There will be three values associated with each 2019 San Antonio Missions Silver Uncirculated Coin – face, melt and numismatic. The face value of each strike will only be twenty-five cents as it is based on the quarter dollars they are struck to resemble.

The coins melt value will be approximately equal to what five ounces of silver is currently trading for since each coin is struck from that amount of the precious metal. Thus, if it is trading for $20 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value of about $100 – five ounces times $20 an ounce equals $100.

Finally, since the coins are struck for collectors, they will have a numismatic value associated with them. This numismatic value typically increases based on the condition and rarity of the strike and is generally much higher than the melt value of the coin.

The Coin Values Page will offer current melt and sales information for the coin once they have been released for sale by the US Mint.

San Antonio Missions Silver Uncirculated Coin Information

The obverse of the 2019 San Antonio Missions SIlver Uncirculated Coins will contain a portrait of George Washington just like the quarter dollars they are struck to resemble. This portrait was created by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been in use in one form or another on the quarters ever since making it one of the most recognizable portraits on American coinage.

Each reverse will contain the design emblematic of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park of Texas. Several design candidates should be offered for review by the US Mint in early 2018 before a final design is unveiled later that year.
