2016 Silver Proof Set

The 2016 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ should include at least a total of thirteen strikes, seven of which are 90% silver coins.

This is one less coin than included in previous annual Silver Proof Sets owing to the fact that only three Presidents may be featured that year as part of the Presidential $1 Coin series. Legislation dictates that a President may not be featured unless they passed away at least two years before their coin would be issued. As such, the last President to be honored in the series currently stands at Ronald Reagan who passed away in 2004. If another former President dies before 2014, then their coin may also be included in this set.

The seven 90% silver strikes of the 2016 Silver Proof Set are the five 2016 America the Beautiful Quarters®, the Kennedy Half Dollar and the Roosevelt Dime.

The following fourteen quarters will be included in the 2016 Silver Proof Set:

Shawnee National Forest Quarter

The obverse of each America the Beautiful Quarter contains the same portrait of the first President of the United States, George Washington, as designed by John Flanagan. The reverse of this 90% silver strike will be emblematic of Shawnee National Forest found in the state of Illinois.

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Quarter

Along with the obverse portrait of Washington, this silver coin will honor Cumberland Gap National Historical Park of Kentucky with a design shown on its reverse.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Quarter

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia will be showcased on the reverse of this precious metal coin. It will be joined by the Flanagan portrait of George Washington on the obverse.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park Quarter

George Washington’s portrait on the obverse will be joined by a reverse design emblematic of Theodore Roosevelt National Park of North Dakota on the reverse of this precious metal coin.

Fort Sumter National Monument Quarter

South Carolina’s Fort Sumter National Monument will be showcased on the reverse of this quarter. The obverse of the coin will contain the standard portrait of George Washington, typical of the America the Beautiful coins.

Kennedy Half Dollar

Gilroy Roberts designed the portrait of John F. Kennedy seen on the obverse of the silver half dollar. The reverse was designed by Frank Gasparro to show an image of the Seal of the President of the United States.

Roosevelt Dime

John R. Sinnock’ portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown on the obverse of this silver coin. It is joined on the reverse by an olive branch, torch and oak branch also designed by Sinnock.

Lincoln Cent

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is seen on the obverse of the Lincoln Cent as designed by Victor D. Brenner. The reverse shows a Union Shield design by Lyndall Bass.

Jefferson Nickel

A portrait of Thomas Jefferson is seen on the obverse of the nickel as designed by Jamie Franki. The reverse shows Monticello, Jefferson’s home, as designed by Felix Schlag.

Native American $1 Coin

Sacagawea, the famous Shoshone woman who helped guide the Lewis and Clark Expedition, is featured on the obverse of the Native American $1 coin series and was designed by Glenna Goodacre. The reverse will continue a series dedicated to the important contributions of Native Americans to the history of the United States.

Richard M. Nixon Presidential $1 Coin

This coin honors the 37th President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, with a portrait of him on the obverse. The reverse of all of the Presidential $1 Coins contains an image of the Statue of Liberty, as designed by Don Everhart.

Gerald Ford Presidential $1 Coin

Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, will be featured on the obverse of this coin. It will be joined on the reverse by Everhart’s Statue of Liberty design.
