Voyageurs Silver Bullion Coins

The 2018 Voyageurs Silver Bullion Coins will be the third release in 2018 minted as part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program. Shown on the reverse of the strike will be a design honoring Voyageurs National Park found in the state of Minnesota with each coin struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches.

The United States Mint will also use that reverse design for the Voyagers Park Quarter struck as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. That is because Congress mandated the bullion coins to use the same designs as the quarters when it authorized both series in Public Law 110-456 (America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008).

Aside from their designs, however, the two series will be quite unique from one another. Whereas the quarter dollars will have a diameter of only 0.955 inches and are generally struck from a clad composition for circulation, these bullion coins will each have a massive diameter of three inches and be composed of five ounces of silver.

Congress created the bullion coins for investors who can add them to their portfolios knowing the strikes weight and fineness is guaranteed by the US government. Collectors interested in the coins may want to look at the 2018 Voyageurs Silver Uncirculated Coins which will feature similar specifications to the bullion strike but are produced by the US Mint solely for numismatic reasons.

2018 Voyageurs Silver Coin Values

Struck to resemble the associated America the Beautiful Quarter, these 2018 Voyageurs Silver Bullion Coins will only have a face value of twenty-five cents like those quarter dollars. That face value will likely be small, however, compared to the melt and numismatic values associated with the coins.

Containing five ounces of silver gives each of these coins an intrinsic melt value approximately equal to what that amount of the precious metal is currently trading for on the open market. Thus, if it is trading for $20 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value of about $100 – five ounces times $20 an ounce equals $100.

Many collectors will also likely be interested in adding these coins to their collection giving them a numismatic value. This value typically increases based on the coin’s perceived rarity as well as its condition with a rare near "mint-state" coin going for much more than a common blemished strike.

Melt values and current sales information can be found on the Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page once the coins have been issued by the US Mint.

Voyageurs Silver Bullion Coin Information

Like the associated quarter, the obverse of the 2018 Voyageurs Silver Bullion Coin will contain a portrait of George Washington. In fact, this portrait will be found on the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful related coins and was originally designed by John Flanagan. The US Mint first used the design on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and it has appeared on the obverse of the quarters in one form or another ever since.

The reverse will contain the design showcasing a portion of Voyageurs National Park of Minnesota. Several design candidates for the strike will be presented to the Treasury Secretary in 2017 who will make the final selection.
