The thirty-third strike released in the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program will be the 2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Bullion Coins. These silver bullion coins will feature a reverse design emblematic of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park found in the state of West Virginia and be composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver with a diameter of three inches.
Both the obverse and reverse designs of the silver bullion coin will be similar to that of the Harpers Ferry Park Quarter released by the US Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. In fact, the entire bullion series is based on the associated quarters program and both were authorized by the same legislation – Public Law 110-456 (America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008),
Despite their similar designs, however, the two series of coins will be quite unique from one another owing to their size and composition. The quarters are typically struck from clad and feature a diameter of only 0.955 inches whereas the bullion coins are struck from five ounces of precious metal and have an extremely large diameter of three inches making them the largest bullion products produced by the US Mint.
Also, the quarters are typically struck for circulation while these bullion coins are intended for investors. Knowing that collectors might be interested in the bullion coins, the US Mint will also produce a Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coin which will feature nearly identical specifications as the bullion strike, but are intended for collectors.
2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Coin Values
Each 2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Bullion Coin will feature a face value of twenty-five cents based on the quarter dollars they are struck to look like. That face value is really a token, however, compared to the strikes melt and numismatic values.
Since each of these coins are struck from five ounces of silver, they will have a melt value approximately equal to that amount of precious metal on the market. Thus, if it is currently trading for $25 an ounce, these coins will have a melt value of approximately $125 – five ounces times $25 an ounce equals $125.
And, as mentioned before, some collectors will likely be interested in owning these silver bullion coins which will give them a numismatic value. This value typically carries a significant premium over and above the coin’s melt value and generally increases based on the rarity and condition of the strike.
Up-to-date melt values can be found on the Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page once the coins are released.
Harpers Ferry Silver Bullion Coin Information
The 2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Bullion Coins will showcase a portrait of George Washington on its obverse. In fact, this image of the first President of the United States will be found on the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful related coins and first appeared on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar. It was designed by John Flanagan.
Shown on the reverse of the bullion coins will be a design emblematic of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia. This design will be based on one of several design candidates likely to be released by the US Mint for the coin early in 2015. From those design candidates, the Treasury Secretary will make the final selection which should be announced later in 2015.
