Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coins

The third strike released in 2016 as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program will be the 2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coin. This uncirculated coin will honor Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia with a reverse design emblematic of the location and will be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches like others in the series.

Those specifications make these coins extremely similar to the Harpers Ferry Silver Bullion Coins issued by the US Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program. In fact, the uncirculated strikes were created as collector-grade versions of those coins under the authority granted the Treasury Secretary in 31 U.S.C. §5111(a) (3).

However, the designs of both programs are taken from yet a third series of US Mint strikes known as the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. These America the Beautiful Quarters are typically struck for circulation and continued the process of featuring new reverse designs on quarter dollars first seen in the extremely popular 50-State Quarters series.

All three America the Beautiful related programs will include a total of fifty-six coins per program when completed in 2021 with one strike in each series representing a specific site of national interest from each state, the District of Columbia and the five US Territories.

2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coin Values

Just like the Harpers Ferry Quarter they are struck to resemble, the 2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coins will only have a face value of twenty-five cents. That amount will be dwarfed, however, by the strikes intrinsic melt value.

That melt value is based on the five ounces of silver contained within each strike and varies based on the current market value of that amount of precious metal. Thus, if it is currently trading for $30 an ounce, these coins will have an intrinsic melt value of about $150 – five ounces times $30 an ounce equals $150.

Finally, since these uncirculated coins are struck for collectors, they will have a numismatic value associated with them. This value generally carries a significant premium over the melt value and typically increases based on the coins condition and rarity.

The Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page will offer current sales and melt value information once the coins are released by the US Mint.

Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coin Information

Each 2016 Harpers Ferry Silver Uncirculated Coin will contain a portrait of George Washington on the obverse. This image of the first President of the United States is included on the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful related strikes and was designed originally by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar.

Shown on the reverse of the strike will be a design emblematic of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park found in the state of West Virginia. The final design should be unveiled by the Mint in late 2015 after it has been chosen by the Secretary of the Treasury.
