The second release of 2018 for the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program will be the 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Bullion Coins. These strikes will each be composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver and feature a reverse design emblematic of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located in the state of Wisconsin.
That reverse design will also be featured on the Apostle Islands Quarter struck as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Both the bullion coins and the circulating quarter dollar series were authorized by Congress under the same piece of legislation – America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 which became Public Law 110-456 when it was signed by President George W. Bush on December 23, 2008.
Congress created this bullion series as an option for investors looking to add small amounts of silver to their portfolios with government guaranteed bullion coins. As such, each piece is guaranteed for weight and purity by the United States government.
While the series is struck for investors, many collectors will also likely be interested in purchasing the strikes. To offer them a numismatic option, the US mint will also strike a 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coin.
2018 Apostle Islands Silver Coin Values
Taking their designs from the Apostle Islands Quarter Dollar, the 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Bullion Coins will feature a face value of only twenty-five cents like those quarters. That face value should be the lowest of three values associated with each of these strikes.
Likely improving on the face value significantly will be the coin’s intrinsic melt value. This is based on the fact that each is struck from five ounces of silver giving them a melt value approximately equal to what that amount of the precious metal would trade for. Thus, if silver is going for $20 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value of about $100 – five ounces times $20 an ounce equals $100.
Finally, the best value for the coin’s may be its numismatic value. This is the amount a collector would be willing to pay to add the coin to their collection and generally carries a premium over and above the strikes melt value.
Once issued, current melt value and sales information may be found on the Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page.
Apostle Islands Silver Bullion Coin Information
The 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Bullion Coins will include a portrait of George Washington on their obverse like all of the other America the Beautiful related coins. This portrait was designed by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been seen on the quarters in one form or another ever since making it one of the most recognizable images of American coinage.
Shown on the reverse of the coin will be the design honoring Apostle Islands National Lakeshore of Wisconsin. The US Mint should release design candidates for the coin early in 2017 with a final design unveiled later that year.
