Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coins

The 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coins will each feature a reverse design honoring Apostle Islands National Lakeshore of Wisconsin. These coins are struck as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program – a series created by the Mint to be the numismatic versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™.

Both these silver uncirculated coins and the related bullion strikes are composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver and feature a diameter of three inches. Their reverse designs are emblematic of selected sites of national interest from around the United States and its territories.

In fact, those reverses are actually originally designed for a third series of coins from the US Mint, the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, and then used again on these larger silver strikes. Thus, in actuality, coins from three different US Mint programs will contain basically the same designs.

However, the specifications of the three series make them quite different from one another. Take for instance their intended purpose. The bullion coins are struck for investors, these uncirculated coins are struck for collectors and the America the Beautiful Quarters are typically struck for circulation.

2018 Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coin Values

Struck to resemble the associated America the Beautiful Quarters, these 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coins will only have a face value of twenty-five cents like those quarter dollars. That face value will likely be the smallest of three values associated with each of the coins.

With each silver uncirculated coin struck from five ounces of the precious metal, they will have an intrinsic melt value approximately equal to five ounces of the precious metal on the open market. Thus, if it is trading for $25 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value of about $125 – five ounces times $25 an ounce equals $125.

Finally, since the US Mint strikes these uncirculated coins for collectors, it is is likely that many will want to add them to their collection. This gives the coin a numismatic value which generally increases based on the condition and rarity of the strike.

The Coin Values Page will show the current melt value of the strike, based on recent market activity, once the coins are released for sale by the US Mint.

Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coin Information

Shown on the obverse of the 2018 Apostle Islands Silver Uncirculated Coin will be a portrait of the first President of the United States, George Washington. In fact, this image of Washington has been on the quarter dollar coins since 1932 in one form or another and was originally designed by John Flanagan.

The reverse of the strike will honor Apostle Islands National Lakeshore found in the state of Wisconsin. Several design candidates should be released by the US Mint in early 2017 for public review before a final design is unveiled later that year.
