Great Sand Dunes Silver Uncirculated Coins

Marking the 24th release of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program will be the 2014 Great Sand Dunes Silver Uncirculated Coin. Coins in this series are each struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches featuring a reverse design emblematic of a selected site of national interest with this specific strike honoring Great Sand Dunes National Park of Colorado.

This series is produced by the US Mint as the collector grade versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program. Both series are struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver but feature slightly different specifications and intended buyers. The bullion coins are struck to bullion quality for investors whereas these silver uncirculated coins feature the numismatic uncirculated finish and are intended for collectors.

Another slightly differentiating factor is the inclusion of a mintmark on the uncirculated coin. This strike will contain a ‘P’ mintmark indicating it was struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia. The bullion coins are also produced in Philadelphia but contain no mintmark.

2014 Great Sand Dunes Silver Uncirculated Coin Values

The 2014 Great Sand Dunes Silver Uncirculated Coin will feature designs taken from the Great Sand Dunes Quarter struck as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. As such, each will only feature a face value of twenty-five cents.

Improving upon that value significantly will be the coin’s melt value which is based on the fact that each coin is struck from five ounces of silver. Accordingly, each will be worth approximately that amount of the precious metal on the open market.

Finally, these coins are struck for collectors and will also likely feature a numismatic value associated with them. This is the amount a collector would be willing to pay to obtain the strike.

The Coin Values Page will show current sales information on the strikes once they are released. Also shown will be the approximate melt value of the coins based on up-to-date silver prices.

Great Sand Dunes Silver Uncirculated Coin Information

John Flanagan designed the portrait of George Washington that will be featured on the obverse of the 2014 Great Sand Dunes Silver Uncirculated Coin. In fact, this same portrait will appear on all of the America the Beautiful related coins and first appeared on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar.

Shown on the reverse will be a design honoring Great Sand Dunes National Park of Colorado. This design should be unveiled by the US Mint late in 2013 with design candidates being offered for review and comment earlier that year.
