Ellis Island Silver Uncirculated Coins

Struck as the fourth 2017-dated release of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program will be the 2017 Ellis Island Silver Uncirculated Coins. This series of silver uncirculated coins is produced by the US Mint as the collector grade versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin® Program from five ounces of .999 fine silver. Shown on the reverse of this strike will be a design emblematic of Ellis Island of New Jersey (part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument).

Both this series of uncirculated coins and the associated bullion coins will feature imagery originally created for the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program. Accordingly, all three series will be operated in similar manners with five new strikes appearing annually per program. The reverse of the strikes is reserved for emblematic imagery of selected sites of national interest from around the United States and its territories.

Thus, the reverse of this uncirculated coin will honor Ellis Island (a part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument) just like the associated Ellis Island Silver Bullion Coin and the Ellis Island Quarter.

2017 Ellis Island Silver Uncirculated Coin Values

Struck to resemble the associated quarter, this 2017 Ellis Island Silver Uncirculated Coin will only have a face value of twenty-five cents like the quarter dollar. That face value should be relatively small, however, compared to the strikes melt and numismatic values.

The coins melt value will be approximately equal to what five ounces of silver is currently trading for on the open market since each coin will be composed of that much of the precious metal. Thus, if it is trading for $25 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value of about $125 – five ounces times $25 an ounce equals $125.

However, the best value associated with these strikes will likely be their numismatic value. This is because collectors are typically willing to pay a premium above the coin’s melt value to obtain the strike and add it to their collection. The amount of this premium usually increases based on the condition of the coin as well as its perceived rarity.

Current melt value and sales information can be found on the Coin Values Page once the US Mint releases these strikes.

Ellis Island Silver Uncirculated Coin Information

Since the coins are struck to resemble the associated quarter dollar, the obverse of each will contain the John Flanagan portrait of George Washington just like all quarter dollars have done since 1932. This image has remained relatively unchanged through the years since first introduced with the only major exception being minor changes to the design when it was used on the 50-State Quarters series.

The reverse of the coin will showcase a design emblematic of Ellis Island of New Jersey. The design will be chosen by the Secretary of the Treasury from several design candidates presented by the US Mint sometime in 2016.
