The 2017 Effigy Mounds Silver Bullion Coins will be the first 2017-dated release in the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program. These silver bullion coins will each be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches and will feature a reverse design showcasing a portion of Effigy Mounds National Monument located in the state of Iowa.
Congress authorized the silver bullion coins along with a series of circulating quarters known as the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program when it passed the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. That legislation became Public Law 110-456 when President George W. Bush signed it on December 23, 2008.
Both series of coins feature similar obverse and reverse designs as dictated by the authorizing legislation. This includes and obverse portrait of George Washington as originally designed by John Flanagan and a reverse design emblematic of the site of national interest being honored by the coin.
The bullion coins are intended for investors as a means of adding small amounts of precious metals to their portfolios, however, collectors will undoubtedly be interested in the strikes as well. With this in mind, the US Mint will also issue a 2017 Effigy Mounds Silver Uncirculated Coin struck solely for collectors.
2017 Effigy Mounds Silver Coin Values
Each 2017 Effigy Mounds Silver Bullion Coin will feature a face value of twenty-five cents. This face value is taken from the quarter dollar it is struck to resemble.
That value is relatively minor, however, compared to the strikes intrinsic melt value which is based on the five ounces of precious metal each coin is struck with. The melt value will be approximately equal to what that amount of silver is currently trading for on the open market. Thus, if it is trading for $40 an ounce, these coins will have a melt value of about $200 – five ounces times $40 an ounce equals $200.
Finally, as mentioned before, collectors will likely have an interest in these strikes with some willing to pay a premium to obtain it. This is known as the coin’s numismatic value and generally increases based on the coin’s condition and rarity.
Once issued, the Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page will offer current melt value information based on recent market activity along with up-to-date sales information on the strikes.

The reverse will showcase a portion of Effigy Mounds National Monument located in the state of Iowa. The US Mint should unveil the final design late in 2016 after allowing several design candidates for the strike to be reviewed earlier that year.
