Cumberland Gap Silver Bullion Coins

The 2016 Cumberland Gap Silver Bullion Coins will be the second 2016-dated strike released by the US Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program. Each of these silver bullion coins will be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver and feature a reverse design emblematic of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park of Kentucky.

Containing five ounces of precious metal qualifies these strikes as the largest bullion products of the US Mint. The Mint produces the coins for investors as a low-cost method for them to purchase small amounts of silver to add to their portfolios.

When issued, the coins will be sold through the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers which obtains the strikes in bulk from the Mint, then resells them to local coin and precious metal dealers for a small premium above the current spot price of the precious metal they contain. Finally, these local dealers then sell them to the public.

While the bullion strikes are intended for investors, many collectors will also be interested in obtaining the strikes. However, those collectors may be more interested in the Cumberland Gap Silver Uncirculated Coins which will be struck by the Mint as the numismatic version of this bullion strike.

2016 Cumberland Gap Silver Coin Values

The 2016 Cumberland Gap Silver Bullion Coins will only have a face value of twenty-five cents as they take their design from the Cumberland Gap Park Quarter struck as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. However, that face value will be small compared to both the coin’s melt and numismatic values.

Since each of these bullion coins are struck from five ounces of precious metal, they will have a melt value approximately equal to that amount of metal on the market. Thus, if silver is currently trading for $20 an ounce, these coins will have a melt value of approximately $100 – five ounces times $20 an ounce equals $100.

Finally, some collectors will likely be interested in owning these coins giving them a numismatic value. This value typically carries a premium above the coins melt value which increases based on the coins perceived rarity and condition.

Up-to-date melt values can be found on the Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page once the coins are released.

Cumberland Gap Silver Bullion Coin Information

The obverse of the 2016 Cumberland Gap Silver Bullion Coin will contain a portrait of George Washington, just like all other America the Beautiful related coins. This image of the first President of the United States was designed by John Flanagan and was first seen on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar. It has been in use on the quarters ever since making it one of the most recognizable designs on American coinage.

Depicted on the reverse will be a design emblematic of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park found in the state of Kentucky. This final design should be unveiled in late 2015 after the Treasury Secretary has selected it from several design candidates made public by the US Mint earlier that year.
