2021 Silver Proof Set

The 2021 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ should contain proof quality examples of the circulating coins produced by the US Mint that year, some of which will be struck from 90% silver. This should included at least a total of six coins, possibly more.

The uncertainty about the number of coins included in the set is owed mostly to the fact that the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program is scheduled to end in 2021. This means that the 2021 America the Beautiful Quarters may only contain one new strike, as opposed to the five issued in each of the previous years since the series debuted in 2010.

More new quarters may be added, however, if the Treasury Secretary opts to continue the series for another complete run of fifty-six new quarters. That decision must be made by the end of 2018, however, and four of those new quarters would likely be included as part of this set as well.

Coins considered to be most likely included in the 2021 Silver Proof Set include:

  • Lincoln Cent
  • Jefferson Nickel
  • Roosevelt Dime
  • Tuskegee Airmen Quarter
  • Kennedy Half Dollar
  • Native American $1 Coin

Additional coins may be added to the set if, as mentioned before, the America the Beautiful Quarter Program is extended. The set may be altered, as well, if Congress opts to create new series of circulating coins or if it eliminates any coins.

If the Mint follows previous procedure, the quarter(s), dime and half dollar of this set will all be struck from 90% silver at the US Mint’s facility in San Francisco. Assuming a total of five quarters are actually struck for the year, and also assuming the dime and half dollar are also produced from silver, the set should contain a total of 1.34 ounces of the precious metal.

The 2021 Silver Proof Set should contain at least these six coins:

Tuskegee Airmen Quarter

This quarter dollar represents the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site established by Congress on November 6, 1998 to commemorate the contributions made by African American Airmen during World War II.

Kennedy Half Dollar

Assuming it is struck to the same specifications as it has been for decades, the John F. Kennedy Half Dollar will contain a portrait of the former President as completed by Gilroy Roberts. The reverse will show the Seal of the President of the United States as envisioned by Frank Gasper.

Roosevelt Dime

The portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt first appeared on the dime in the 1940’s and was originally completed by John R. Sinnock. The reverse has always shown an olive branch, torch and oak branch and was also done by Sinnock.

Lincoln Cent

Victor David Brenner designed the original portrait of Abraham Lincoln that has been found on the cent coin since 1909. The reverse was changed in 2010 to show a Union Shield as designed by Lyndall Bass.

Jefferson Nickel

The portrait of Thomas Jefferson seen on the nickel for several years was originally designed by Jamie Franki. The reverse shows Jefferson’s home of Monticello as designed by Felix Schlag.

Native American $1 Coin

Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their 1804-1806 expedition through the frontiers of the United States is shown on the obverse of the coin with a portrait by Glenna Goodacre. The reverse will likely show a scene showing an important contribution that Native Americans have made to the history of the United States.
