The 2020 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ may possibly be the last such set to contain five strikes of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
That is because the 2020 America the Beautiful Quarters mark the fifty-first through fifty-fifth coins in the original fifty-six coin series which debuted in 2010. Strikes in the series were scheduled to be released at a rate of five per year leaving the single fifty-sixth strike to be issued in 2021.
Coins included in the 2020 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will honoring the following locations:
- National Park of American Samoa in American Samoa
- Weir Farm National Historic Site in Connecticut
- Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve in the U.S. Virgin Islands
- Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Vermont
- Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas
The 90% silver coins included in this set will feature reverse designs emblematic of these locations.
Shown on the obverse of each strike will be John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This same portrait has appeared on the quarter dollar in one form or another since 1932 including all of the America the Beautiful Coins.
As each coin is struck from 90% silver, the combined five coins contain a total of 0.904 ounces of the precious metal. This gives each set an intrinsic melt value approximately equal to that amount, although most collect the sets for their numismatic value and interest, and not its melt value.
Coins to be included as part of the 2020 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set are shown again below along with some corresponding information:
2020 National Park of American Samoa Quarter
The National Park of American Samoa is found on three separate islands of American Samoa including Tutuila, Ofu-Olosega, and Ta‘ū. The park was established on October 31, 1988 and is the only American National Park south of the equator.
Those who visit the park will find it is more of a living park and offers a multitude of activities including snorkeling, hiking and scuba diving.
2020 Weir Farm Quarter
The Weir Farm National Historic Site is found in the state of Connecticut and was established in 1990. The site commemorates the work and life of American Impressionist painter J. Alden Weir.
A short tour of Weir’s studio is offered by the Park Service.
2020 Salt River Bay Quarter
The Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve was established on the US Virgin Island of St. Croix to accomplish both tasks as identified in its name. First, it is a historical park marking the only location where members of the Columbus Expedition set foot on soil that is now under the control of the United States.
Second, it preserves the fragile ecosystem found there which consists of forests as well as marine environments.
2020 Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Quarter
Established on August 26, 1992, the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park of Vermont takes its name from three of its previous owners – George Marsh, Frederick Billings and Laurence and Mary French Rockefeller. The site is the location where billings established a progressive dairy farm as well as a managed forest operation.
The small 643 acre park includes George Perkins Marshes boyhood home.
2020 Tallgrass Prairie Quarter
The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve was established on November 12, 1996 and protects a small portion of tallgrass prairie that once covered over 400,000 square miles of North America. Less than 4% of that original amount remains today (mostly in this region) after having been plowed under to make way for crops.
The preserve consists of 10,894 acres which is managed jointly by the National Park Service and the Nature Conservancy.
