2017 Silver Proof Set

The 2017 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ will likely contain at least a total of ten strikes, seven of which will be 90% silver coins.

Those ten coins included in the silver proof set are proof quality examples representative of the circulating coinage produced by the US Mint that year. This will include at least the Lincoln Cent, the Jefferson Nickel, the Roosevelt Dime, the five 2017 America the Beautiful Quarters®, the Kennedy Half Dollar and the Native American $1 Coin.

There is the slight chance that another series of coins may also be extended into the year and might appear as part of this silver proof set as well. The series of coins in question is the Presidential $1 Coin series which debuted in 2007 and honors four former Presidents annually as part of it. However, all of the eligible Presidents may have been honored by 2016 ending the series that year.

As previously mentioned, seven of the coins of this set should be struck from 90% silver. These seven coins will be the five quarter dollars, the Roosevelt Dime and the Kennedy Half Dollar. Of course, the US Mint may also alter which coins it strikes from silver for the silver proof set, or Congress may order a change in the circulating coinage line-up, which would also affect this set.

As it stands now, however, the coins included as part of the 2017 Silver Proof Set will be:

Effigy Mounds Quarter

This strike honors Effigy Mounds National Monument of Iowa with a design showcased on its reverse. Effigy Mounds was established in 1949 and preserves over 200 prehistoric mounds built by Native Americans of the region as far back as 500 B.C.

Frederick Douglass Quarter

The reverse of this quarter honors the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site found in the District of Columbia. Frederick Douglass was a 19th century abolitionist who was born a slave but ended up a free man only to fight for the freedom of others.

Ozark Quarter

Shown on the reverse of this strike will be a design emblematic of Ozark National Scenic Riverways found in the state of Missouri. Ozark was established in the 1960’s to preserve the clean running riverways of Current and Jack Fork.

Ellis Island Quarter

Ellis Island (part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument) is located in the state of New Jersey and is featured on the reverse of this quarter dollar to acknowledge the important immigration center where millions of immigrant first set foot on American soil in the latter half of the 1800’s and the first part of the 1900’s.

George Rogers Clark Quarter

While the name may not be well known, the reverse of this quarter honors the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park found in Indiana. The state initiated construction on the associated memorial in the 1930’s to acknowledge the important contributions that Clark made to the history of the United States during the American Revolutionary War.

Kennedy Half Dollar

If keeping with the same design created years earlier, the obverse will contain a portrait of John F. Kennedy as designed by Gilroy Roberts. The reverse will show the Seal of the President of the United States as designed by Frank Gasparro.

Roosevelt Dime

John R. Sinnock’ portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt has been shown on the obverse of this coin since the 1940’s. Sinnock also designed the reverse at that time to show an olive branch, torch and oak branch.

Lincoln Cent

Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait of this cent coin to show Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The reverse shows a Union Shield design by Lyndall Bass that first appeared in 2010.

Jefferson Nickel

A portrait of Thomas Jefferson is seen on the obverse of the nickel as designed by Jamie Franki. The reverse shows Monticello, Jefferson’s home, as designed by Felix Schlag.

Native American $1 Coin

Continuing a series showing the important contributions Native Americans have made to the history of the United States with their reverse designs, this Native American $1 Coin will also likely showcase a portrait of Sacagawea on its obverse. She was the Shoshone Native American who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition through the frontier of the United States.
