The 2012 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ will be one of two annual sets released by the US Mint in 2012 to contain 90% silver coins.
Included in the 2012 Silver Proof Set should be a total of fourteen coins, if the Mint follows past procedures. These fourteen strikes represent the circulating coinage of the United States for the year. However, each will be struck to proof quality at the US Mint’s facility in San Francisco instead of the business strike used on the circulating releases resulting in a coin with a much higher level of detail.
Making the set even more unique is the fact that seven of the coins will be struck from 90% silver instead of the typical clad composition of the circulation strikes. These seven coins will include the five 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters®, the Kennedy Half Dollar and the Roosevelt Dime.
The following fourteen quarters will be included in the 2012 Silver Proof Set:
El Yunque National Forest Quarter
The El Yunque National Forest Quarter included in this set will be struck from 90% of the precious metal with a portrait of George Washington on its obverse. The reverse will showcase a design emblematic of El Yunque National Forest found in the United States territory of Puerto Rico.
Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter
As with the other America the Beautiful coins, the obverse of the 90% silver Chaco coin contains a portrait of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The reverse will contain a design emblematic of Chaco Culture National Historical Park of New Mexico.
Acadia National Park Quarter
The portrait of Washington used on the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful coins was originally designed by John Flanagan and will be included on this 90% silver quarter. The reverse of this quarter will feature a portion of Acadia National Park found in the state of Maine.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter
Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington will be shown on the obverse of the 90% precious metal Hawaii Quarter, just like the rest of the series. For the reverse, a design showcasing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the state of Hawaii will be shown.
Denali National Park Quarter
