1998 Robert F. Kennedy Commemorative Silver Dollars

The 1998 Robert F. Kennedy Commemorative Silver Dollars were available from the United States Mint from January 2, 1998, through December 31, 1998.

These commemorative silver coins were released to honor Kennedy, former Senator and Attorney General of the United States. Robert served as the Attorney General under his older brother John F. Kennedy’s administration and for several months after the assassination of John. He then resigned the post to seek the position as U.S. Senator from New York, which he won.

While in both positions, Robert took a firm stance on the civil rights of all Americans. He insured that Black Americans had the right to vote, to go to school and to use all public facilities, something that was denied to many before.

In 1968, Kennedy began to campaign for the office of the President of the United States himself. He became the Democratic front-runner only to be assassinated at the age of 42 on June 4, 1968.

Silver Dollar Information

The Robert F. Kennedy Silver Dollars were authorized as part of Public Law 103-328, section 206. Under the law, a surcharge collected on the sale of each coin was to be forwarded to the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial to improve the endowment of the memorial.

The obverse of each coin shows a front-facing portrait of Kennedy as designed by Thomas D. Rogers. Also included are the inscriptions of ROBERT F. KENNEDY, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY and 1998.

On the reverse a combination of two emblems is shown: the Seal of the Department of Justice and the Seal of the United States Senate. Included as well are the inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, JUSTICE and the U.S. Mints facility in San Francisco’s mintmark of ‘S’. It was also designed by Thomas D. Rogers.

The United States Mint also issued a Black Revolutionary War Patriots Commemorative Silver Dollar in 1998.
