1995 XXVI Olympiad Cycling Commemorative Silver Dollar

The 1995 XXVI Olympiad Cycling Commemorative Silver Dollar was part of a sixteen coin series issued by the United States Mint in 1995 and 1996 to celebrate the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Georgia. These sixteen strikes included four clad half dollars, eight silver dollars and four $5 gold coins.

Cycling has been a part of the modern Olympic Games since they began in 1896. In that year, events were included such as the individual sprint, the 10km race, the 100km race, the 12 hour race and the road race. All were participated in only by men as women were not allowed to compete in the Olympics that year.

The Atlanta Games were unofficially hailed as the centennial Olympic Games owing to the fact that the modern Olympics could be traced back to 1896. The logo for the games even consisted of a stylized Olympic torch consisting of the number 100 at the base with the Olympic rings over it.

Silver Dollar Information

The 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 102-390) authorized the entire series of sixteen coins struck by the US Mint to commemorate the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. However, with so many commemoratives released in such a short period of time, collectors only purchased relatively small numbers of them.

Each obverse of the Cycling Commemorative Silver Dollar contains an image of three men cycling towards the holder of the coin. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions of XXVI OLYMPIAD, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1995 and the USA Olympic Logo. It was designed by United States Mint Sculptor / Engraver John Mercanti.

The reverse featured on this coin was the same used on all four of the 1995 released Olympic Silver Dollars. It showed two hands clasped underneath the 100th anniversary Olympic logo. Also shown are the inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ATLANTA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR and a ‘P’ or a ‘D’ mintmark. The reverse was designed by William Krawczewicz and sculpted by T. James Ferrell

The United States Mint struck its proof quality Cycling coins at its facility in Philadelphia. Uncirculated Cycling coins were struck at the Denver facility.

Surcharges collected on the sale of each coin were split between the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, Inc. and the United States Olympic Committee.
