Shenandoah Silver Bullion Coins

The second 2014 release of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin® Program will be the 2014 Shenandoah Silver Bullion Coins. These strikes honor Shenandoah National Park of Virginia and will be minted from five ounces of .999 fine silver like other coins in the series.

This program features reverse designs emblematic of sites of national interest from around the United States and its territories just like the circulating Park Quarters. In fact, both series of coins will feature almost identical designs as required by the single piece of legislation that authorized the programs – Public Law 110-456 (America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008).

Despite having similar designs, however, the size and purpose of the coins are quite different. The quarter dollars are the standard size for quarters and typically struck for circulation whereas these bullion strikes have a diameter of three inches and are intended for investors. Accordingly, the bullion coins will be sold through the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers which is standard practice for all bullion products from the Mint.

The US Mint will also be striking a version of the silver bullion coins for collectors, however, with the corresponding strike of this specific coin being the Shenandoah Uncirculated Coin.

2014 Shenandoah Silver Coin Values

Three values will likely be associated with each of the 2014 Shenandoah Silver Bullion Coins once they are available. The lowest of these values should be its face value as it is based on the quarter dollars from which these silver bullion coins take their design. As such, it is only twenty-five cents.

Improving upon that significantly should be the coins melt value which should be approximately equal to what five ounces of silver is currently trading for on the open market. Finally, some of the coins may also have a numismatic value associated with it if any collectors are interested in obtaining the strike. This value typically increases if there is a perceived rarity in the strike or if the coin in question is relatively free from scratches and other blemishes.

Shenandoah Silver Bullion Coin Information

A portrait of George Washington is featured on the obverse of each America the Beautiful related coin. This portrait was originally completed by John Flanagan and first appeared on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar. It has been in use on the quarter in one form or another ever since making it a design familiar to most who have seen American coinage.

The reverse of the Shenandoah Silver Bullion Coin will contain a design emblematic of Shenandoah National Park. Design candidates for the strike should appear early in 2013 for review before the US Mint announces the final design later that year.
