The 2015 Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin will mark the first of five 2015-dated releases of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program. Coins in this series are each struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver and feature reverse designs emblematic of a selected site of national interest – in this case, Homestead National Monument of America found in the state of Nebraska.
These coins are struck as the collector-grade versions of the Mint’s America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program. The silver bullion coins are also struck from five ounces of silver, but are intended for investors whereas these uncirculated coins are struck for collectors.
Their intended market are not the only differences between the two versions of the coins. First, the uncirculated coin is struck with more pressure than the related bullion strike which typically results in a higher level of detail. Second, the Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin will contain a ‘P’ mintmark indicating it was struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia. The related bullion coin will also be struck in Philadelphia but will not contain a mintmark which is standard practice for US Mint bullion products.
Both, however, will feature an obverse and reverse design taken from the Homestead America the Beautiful Quarter.
2015 Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin Values
Following their release, there will be three values associated with each 2015 Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin – a face value, a melt value and a numismatic value.
The lowest of these will be the coin’s face value which is based on the quarter dollar from which it takes its design. Thus, each will only have a face value of twenty-five cents.
Increasing that amount significantly will be the coin’s intrinsic melt value. This is based on the fact that each coin is struck from five ounces of silver and thus is worth approximately that much of the precious metal on the open market.
Finally, and likely the highest value for the strike will be its numismatic value. This is the amount the coin is worth to a collector and typically increases based on the condition and rarity of the strike.
The Coin Values Page will offer current sales information on the strikes once issued by the US Mint. A melt value will also be shown on this page.
Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin Information
Struck on the obverse of each America the Beautiful related coin is a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This portrait was originally designed by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been in use on the quarters ever since making it easily recognizable by many familiar with American coinage.
The reverse of the 2015 Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin will contain a design emblematic of Homestead National Monument of America found in the state of Nebraska. This reverse should be unveiled by the Mint sometime in late 2014, however, design candidates for the strike will appear much earlier that year.
