Homestead Silver Bullion Coins

The 2015 Homestead Silver Bullion Coins will mark the first of five 2015-dated strikes in the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin® Program. Strikes in this silver bullion coin series are each minted from five ounces of .999 fine silver and feature reverse designs emblematic of sites of national interest from around the United States with this specific coin honoring Homestead National Monument of America found in the state of Nebraska.

Congress authorized these silver bullion coins as part of Public Law 110-456 (America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008) which also authorized a related series of quarter dollars. In fact, it is from these quarter dollars that the bullion coins take their design from. As such, the obverse of each contains a portrait of George Washington seen on quarters in one form or another since 1932.

However, the size, content and intended market for these bullion coins make them quite different from the quarter dollars. Each is struck to a diameter of three inches from the five ounces of silver and are intended for investors as a low cost method of adding the precious metal to their portfolios. As a bullion product of the US Mint, the silver bullion coins weight and purity are guaranteed by the US government.

Collectors may be interested in the related Homestead Silver Uncirculated Coin which features similar specifications to this bullion strike but are minted for numismatic reasons.

2015 Homestead Silver Coin Values

These 2015 Homestead Silver Bullion Coins will only feature a face value of twenty-five cents despite actually being worth much more. That face value is based on the quarter dollars they take their design from and is relatively minor compared to the coins melt value. Since each is struck from five ounces of silver, its melt value is approximately equal to that amount of the precious metal on the silver market.

Finally, some collectors may be interested in adding some of these coins to their collection. If so, some of the coins may have a numismatic value as well. This value is based on what a collector would be willing to pay to add it to their collection and generally increases based on the condition of the coin as well as how rare the strike is thought to be.

Homestead Silver Bullion Coin Information

The 2015 Homestead Silver Bullion Coin will contain an obverse portrait of George Washington, as previously mentioned. This portrait was originally designed by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been in use on the quarters ever since.

The reverse will showcase a design emblematic of Homestead National Monument of America. The US Mint should release the final design sometime late in 2014 with design candidates issued for review earlier that year.
