The 2017 George Rogers Clark Silver Uncirculated Coins will each be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program. Shown on the reverse of the silver uncirculated coin will be a design emblematic of George Rogers Clark National Historical Park found in the state of Indiana.
This strike marks the fortieth to appear in the uncirculated coin series overall which are struck as the collector grade versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program. The strike also marks the fifth of five scheduled for 2017 with coins honoring Effigy Mounds National Monument of Iowa, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site of the District of Columbia, Ozark National Scenic Riverways of Missouri and Ellis Island (part of Statue of Liberty National Monument) of New Jersey all scheduled to appear earlier that year.
As can be inferred from the list of locations to be honored by these coins in 2017, the entire series is dedicated to honoring sites of national interest from around the United States. This will include a total of fifty-six locations before the program is scheduled to end in 2021 with one coin honoring one site from each state, the District of Columbia and the five US territories.
2017 George Rogers Clark Silver Uncirculated Coin Values
Each 2017 George Rogers Clark Silver Uncirculated Coin actually takes its design from an associated George Rogers Clark Quarter Dollar struck as part of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program. As such, these five ounce uncirculated coins only feature a face value of twenty-five cents. However, that face value is small compared to the strikes intrinsic melt value and its numismatic value.
Since each coin is struck from five ounces of silver, they will also have an intrinsic melt value approximately equal to what that amount of the precious metal would currently trade for. Thus, if it is trading for $35 an ounce, these coins would have an intrinsic melt value of $175 – five ounces times $35 an ounce equals $175.
Finally, since these coins are struck for collectors, it is likely that many would be interested in obtaining them. Also likely is the fact that they would be willing to pay a premium above the current melt value of the coin especially if the strike is considered rare or in good condition. The total amount they would be willing to pay is known as the numismatic value.
The Coin Values Page will offer current melt value and sales figures for the strikes once they are released for sale to the public.
George Rogers Clark Silver Uncirculated Coin Information
Struck to resemble the associated quarter dollar, these coins will have a portrait of George Washington on their obverse. This image of Washington actually appears on all of the America the Beautiful related coins and has also been seen on the quarter dollars in one form or another since 1932. It was originally designed by John Flanagan.
The reverse will honor George Rogers Clark National Historical Park of Indiana with a design emblematic of the location. Several design candidates should be offered by the US Mint for review early in 2016. From those candidates, the Treasury Secretary will select the final design with the help of comment provided from groups like the Citizen’s Coinage Advisory Committee and the United States Commission of Fine Arts.
