The 2016 Fort Moultrie Silver Uncirculated Coins will each be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches and will mark the final of five 2016-dated releases of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program. These Fort Moultrie Silver Uncirculated Coins will honor Fort Moultrie (a part of Fort Sumter National Monument) found in the state of South Carolina.
The United States Mint will strike these uncirculated coins as the collector-grade versions of its Fort Moultrie Silver Bullion Coins. The bullion coins are minted as part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program which themselves are struck as large versions of the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
This means that both the Fort Moultrie bullion and the silver uncirculated coins will contains designs originally created for the Fort Moultrie America the Beautiful Quarter. This includes an obverse portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, and a reverse design emblematic of Fort Moultrie of South Carolina.
However, design similarities aside, both the bullion and silver uncirculated coins will be much larger in size than the associated quarter dollars. Also, their intent will be quite different as well with the bullion coins struck for investors and the uncirculated coins intended for investors. Most of the America the Beautiful Quarter Dollars are struck for circulation.
2016 Fort Moultrie Silver Uncirculated Coin Values
These 2016 Fort Moultrie Silver Uncirculated Coins will feature a face value of twenty-five cents. This is the value given the coins as legal tender by the United States government.
However, that face value is small compared to the coins melt value which is tied to the fact that each is struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver. This means each coin will always be worth approximately the same amount as what five ounces of the precious metal would trade for on the open market.
Finally, since these coins are struck for collectors, they should have a numismatic value associated with them. This is the amount a collector would pay to obtain the strike and generally increases based on its condition and perceived rarity.
The Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page will offer current sales and melt value information once the US Mint releases the strikes.
Fort Moultrie Silver Uncirculated Coin Information
As stated before, the obverse of each America the Beautiful related coin will contain a portrait of George Washington on its obverse. This portrait was originally created by John Flanagan for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been seen on the quarters ever since making it one of the most recognizable portraits on American coinage.
The reverse will contain a design emblematic of Fort Moultrie (part of Fort Sumter National Monument) of South Carolina. The final design will be selected by the Treasury Secretary from several design candidates presented by the US Mint.
