Appearing as the fourth of five 2018 strikes of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program will be the 2018 Cumberland Island Silver Bullion Coins. These coins will honor Cumberland Island National Seashore of Georgia on their reverse and will be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches.
The United States Mint strikes the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins for investors as a means for them to add small amounts of silver to their portfolios at as close to market prices as possible. To achieve this, the Mint sells the coins in bulk to its network of authorized purchasers who, in turn, resells them to local coin and precious metal dealers. These dealers then offer them to the public for a small premium above the current spot price of the silver contained within them.
Making the coins unique, however, is the fact that they will take their designs from the America the Beautiful Quarters®, also produced by the US Mint. As such, the reverse of each coin will be emblematic of a selected site of national interest from around the United States and its territories.
Many collectors may also be interested in adding these bullion coins to their collection despite their original intent of investor purchases. To acknowledge that fact, the US Mint will also strike a 2018 Cumberland Island Silver Uncirculated Coin which will be sold for numismatic purposes directly to the public by the US Mint.
2018 Cumberland Island Silver Coin Values
The 2018 Cumberland Island Silver Bullion Coins will only feature a face value of twenty-five cents like the quarter dollars they are struck to resemble. That face value should be relatively small, however, compared to the coin’s melt and numismatic values.
With each coin struck from five ounces of silver, they will also have an intrinsic melt value approximately equal to that amount of the precious metal on the open market. Thus, if silver is trading for $25 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value of about $125 – five ounces times $25 an ounces equals $125.
As mentioned before, collectors may also be interested in obtaining the strikes. If so, they will also have a numismatic value associated with them which typically contains a premium over and above the melt value.
The Mint Prices, Values & Sales Figures Page offers current melt and sales information on the strikes, once they have been issued by the US Mint.
Cumberland Island Silver Bullion Coin Information
The 2018 Cumberland Island Silver Bullion Coins will have a portrait of George Washington on their obverse, as designed by John Flanagan. This portrait was originally created for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has appeared on the quarters in one form or another ever since.
Shown on the reverse of the coin will be a design emblematic of Cumberland Island National Seashore of Georgia. Several design candidates will be released for review in 2017 by the US Mint before a final selection is announced later that year.
