Released as the fourth of five 2015-dated strikes in the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program will be the 2015 Bombay Hook Silver Uncirculated Coins. Each of these uncirculated coins will be produced from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches with a reverse design emblematic of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge of Delaware.
The United States Mint strikes these uncirculated coins as the collector versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program. These bullion strikes feature similar specifications including being struck from five ounces of the precious metal with a diameter of three inches and also feature identical imagery. Their main difference lies in who they are produced for, which in the instance of the bullion strikes is investors. This differs from the America the Beautiful Uncirculated Coins which are produced for collectors.
Two other factors differentiate the strikes. The first is the inclusion of a mintmark on the uncirculated coin indicating it is struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia. The second is the finish which will typically be more detailed on the uncirculated coin as it is struck with more pressure.
Those familiar with American coinage may find the design familiar as it will also be featured on the Bombay Hook Quarter struck as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. In fact, the quarter dollars serve as the basis for both of the larger precious metal programs.
2015 Bombay Hook Silver Uncirculated Coin Values
When issued, the 2015 Bombay Hook Silver Uncirculated Coin will have face value of only twenty-five cents as it takes that value from the quarter dollar it is associated with. That twenty-five cents is small, however, when compared to what the coin’s melt and numismatic value should be.
The coin will feature a melt value approximately equal to the five ounces of silver contained within each strike. Thus, if the precious metal is currently trading for $30 an ounce, these coins would have a melt value approximately equal to $150 – five ounces times $30 an ounce equals $150.
Finally, as these uncirculated coins are really struck for collectors, there should be much interest from those collectors in obtaining the strikes. Typically, they would be willing to pay a significant premium for the coins over and above what their face or numismatic value is. The amount they would be willing to pay also typically increases based on the coin’s perceived rarity and the strikes condition. This is known as its numismatic value.
Once issued by the Mint, recent sales and melt values will be shown on the Coin Values Page.
Bombay Hook Silver Uncirculated Coin Information
The obverse of the 2015 Bombay Hook Silver Uncirculated Coin will contain a portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan. In fact, this portrait will grace the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful coins and is the same one featured on the quarter dollars since 1932.
Shown on the reverse of the coin will be a design emblematic of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge of Delaware. The US Mint should offer design candidates for review sometime in early 2014 with the final design unveiled later that year after it has been chosen by the Treasury Secretary.
